Tennessee Promise program wins regional innovation award

Tennessee Promise is being recognized for its innovative efforts.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission and its program were selected as one of two winners of the 2018 State Transformation in Action Recognition award.

The award was given to the commission and its program for contributing to the state’s rise in the number of students earning a college degree or certificate.

The STAR award of the Southern Legislative Conference identifies and promotes state government solutions to regional problems, focusing on policy innovations that are creative, impactful, transferable and effective, according to a news release.

The program was selected as a winner by a panel of legislators, policy professionals, and experts.

ennessee Promise, created in 2015, is a last-dollar scholarship that pays tuition and fees at a state community college or technical program.  The scholarships, on average, provide about $1,000 per student and each student is paired with a mentor.
