Overview

The Top Career Paths dashboard displays top career path openings, occupations options and average wage by education level in Tennessee. You can view the data broadly, or you can choose a specific career path and occupation or education level. Career Path options are listed on the top left of the screen in the Top Career Path Postsecondary Openings list. Occupation options are listed on the top right of the screen in the Occupations list. Education level options are available along the bottom of the chart at the bottom of the screen. Selecting an item from any of these areas (the two lists or the chart) will affect what information is displayed in the other areas. You can choose to view the data by education level or choose an occupation or career path first.
For example, to view the average wage for a middle school teacher:

Begin by selecting the teaching career path. To select this career path, navigate to the Top Career Path Postsecondary Openings list at the top left of the screen and select “Teaching/Training” (see example 1). Next, navigate to the Occupations list at the top right of the screen and select “Middle School Tchrs, Except Spec & Career/Tech Ed” (see example 2). The chart at the bottom of the screen will display the desired data, showing both the career path openings (the blue figure) and the average wage (the green dollar sign). To display a dialog box with more information, you can hover the cursor over either the blue figure or the dollar sign (see example 3).

How do I select a field?

To select a specific field within the Top Career Path Postsecondary Openings list or the Occupations list, simply click on the desired field with your mouse. Once selected, the field will be highlighted in blue. You can select multiple fields by holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while clicking the mouse. Once selected, a small dialog box will show the options to keep only that field or exclude it completely. These are optional, and you do not have to pick either of these suggestions to use the dashboard.

How do I clear a selected field or all selected fields?

To clear a selected field, simply click on the selected field with your mouse. Once the field is no longer selected, the blue highlight will be removed. To clear all selected fields and start over, navigate to the bottom of the screen. There you will see four small icons (see example 4). Click the round Revert All icon (second to the left). The lists should reset and clear all selected fields

What is a Labor Workforce Investment Area (LWIA), and how do I find my county’s LWIA?

Tennessee’s statewide Career Center System is sub-divided into 13 Local Workforce Investment Areas. These areas, which are administered by a local board, are clusters of counties whose labor market and other employment related factors are similar. Consequently, each area provides workforce development and career services based on local needs. (For more information about area career centers, visit http://www.tn.gov/labor-wfd/cc/ccareas.htm.)

To find your county’s LWIA number on the Career Path Projections (Statewide and by Workforce Investment Area) dashboard, navigate to the map at the bottom of the screen and hover your cursor over the desired county. A small box will appear showing the county’s LWIA. You can also use the map’s legend to find your county’s LWIA (see example 5). Once your county’s LWIA has been located, you can choose the LWIA from the Select Area drop-down list in the top middle of the screen (see example 6).
